Acknowledged throughout the golfing world, the Algarve in Southern Portugal represents some of the finest golf real estate there is. Most golfers don’t stray far from the well-trodden courses of the Central Algarve, but if you want to experience enjoyable golf in fabulous scenery it’s here in the Western Algarve.
The Western Algarve offers a quality of golf sometimes not found in the over populated tracks normally associated with Algarve golf. The resort of Santo Antonio (formally Parque Da Floresta) offers stunning scenery along with a course you’ll want to come back to time and time again. It’s a course you’ll never quite master but will thoroughly enjoy trying to. Set in the heart of the resort, yet hidden by trees and only 200m from the clubhouse MyVilla6 is your perfect base.

The architect designed course offers an interesting mix of holes winding in and out of the luxury villa’s and bordering the Costa Vicenta Nature Reserve. The clubhouse offers stunning wide panoramic views and glimpses over the course and to the sea beyond, they beckon you to venture onto this excellently prepared course. The opening par 4 which gracefully curves in a slight dogleg left to an elevated green lit by the early morning sun sets the scene for a fabulous round of golf. Keep it going over the next few holes until you reach the fifth. This par 3 is a true test, at only 113m it seems innocent on the card but when you are faced with the magnificent view from the elevated tee to the postage stamp green below with drop off on three sides, you need to focus your attention.
The ninth on the way back to the clubhouse is stroke hole one and you’ll be extremely happy to come off with a par and if you don’t, well, there’s always tomorrow. The 10th leads off from the clubhouse and borders the eighteenth in the valley below. Work your way along the fairways in the natural valleys bordered by the elevated villas and you’ll reach the signature 15th. This par three set in a natural amphitheatre with an elevated tee looking out over the lake to the elevated green beyond with steeply rising groud behind rewards the brave.
Set in a natural amphitheatre the 18th is a gentle dogleg left and seems an easy finishing hole until you see your approach to the green. Elevated in the distance under the shadow of the watching golfers at the clubhouse the shot to the green requires the concentration to make or break your memory of a great round of golf.
Walk off the green and meet up with none players who’ve only had to walk the 200m from MyVilla6 to cheer you home. The extremely welcoming and friendly clubhouse staff are ready to serve you with great food and the refreshing drink you’ve been thinking about on the home stretch.
There is club hire available at the pro shop for very reasonable rates along with cart hire; which in the summer is a must, given the temperatures this area enjoys.
There are other courses available, notably 10 minutes down the road is the challenging eco-friendly course of Espiche. Boavista is another course to try, only 15 minutes’ drive to the outskirts of Lagos; this more typical well used Algarve course becomes quite busy in the season but could be worth a visit.
